Description:
Superb 1796 "End of Pain" Thomas Paine Satirical Token. This charming design depicts the (fictional) hanging of Paine. One of the intellectual sparks of the American Revolution, he continued his radical politics into the 1790s, when he supported the French Revolution despite widespread English revulsion and opposition. This example is 1796-2 in Sullivan, in copper. It is a magnificent, uncirculated specimen, with much original luster. By a wide margin, the finest copy we have handled.
